Online Crane Exam Prep for Palm Bay Operators and Delivery Drivers

Much of Palm Bay's crane work happens one lot at a time. As the city fills in westward toward the St. Johns River marshes, trucks with knuckle booms drop trusses and block, boom trucks set lift stations and drainage structures, and utility crews raise poles along new roads. Those operators need the same accredited certification as anyone running a bigger machine at the Cape. Our self-paced course helps Palm Bay workers get ready for the written exam on a phone or laptop.

A parkway that opened up the west side

The St. Johns Heritage Parkway was planned for years as a western spine for Palm Bay. Its southern I-95 connection, a diverging diamond built by FDOT just north of Micco Road, was physically finished in 2019 but sat closed for about a year because the local road link wasn't done. It finally opened on August 11, 2020, tying the interchange to Babcock Street.

Roads like that pull residential and commercial building behind them. In practice that means streams of material deliveries, precast stormwater boxes, and occasional mid-size hydraulic crane work for commercial pads. None of it makes the news, and all of it needs certified operators and qualified riggers.

Satellite buildings and a bigger water plant

Palm Bay's largest employer builds hardware for space. In August 2025 L3Harris finished a $100 million expansion of its satellite integration and test facility in the city, a building of roughly 94,000 square feet aimed at missile-tracking satellites. The state also awarded the company a high-impact performance grant tied to two new Palm Bay buildings: a satellite integration facility of about 93,000 square feet and a 98,000-square-foot microelectronics plant with a cleanroom. Jobs like these bring steel erection, precast, rooftop mechanical units and heavy process equipment, which keeps mobile crane operators and riggers busy through the build. The high-bay overhead cranes inside a finished plant fall under OSHA's general industry rules rather than the construction crane standard, so check which rules apply when you are asked to run one.

The city's water system is growing with the population. Palm Bay Utilities opened bids in May 2025 to expand its South Regional Water Treatment Plant from 6 to 8 million gallons per day, along with a new production well, and held a public open house at the plant in March 2026. The utility's master plan lists hundreds of millions of dollars in future wells, treatment plants, storage tanks and mains. Setting membrane skids, pumps, tank sections and large-diameter pipe is routine work for boom truck and hydraulic crane crews, usually with a Rigger Level 1 hand on the ground.

Which machine are you actually running?

OSHA's crane rules care about the type of equipment. Before you pick a course, figure out what you operate most days:

  • Knuckle-boom truck delivering building materials: look at articulating crane operator. Some delivery work falls under a limited exemption, but many builders and suppliers want the card anyway.
  • Service truck with a small crane for utility or equipment work: service truck crane operator fits the restricted NCCCO category for those units.
  • Digger derrick setting poles for a power or phone crew: digger derrick operator. Utility work has a partial exemption from the crane standard, so check what your employer requires.
  • Hydraulic truck crane on commercial jobs: mobile crane operator.

Ground and weather on the edge of the marsh

West Palm Bay borders the low, wet headwaters of the St. Johns River. Freshly cleared lots there can hold water for days after a storm, and the sandy fill over them is not always compacted the way a crane needs. Set outriggers on mats, check for buried utilities and soft spots, and don't assume a lot is ready just because a concrete truck drove on it.

Summer afternoons are the other hazard. The Melbourne-Palm Bay metro ranked second among large US metros for lightning density in a 2023 Vaisala report, with most strikes in July and August. Schedule picks for the morning, keep an eye on the sky to the west, and know when your crew stops work.

Getting certified without leaving the route

Florida does not license crane operators, and Palm Bay doesn't either. Federal OSHA requires certification from an accredited body for the type and capacity of crane you run, plus an evaluation by your employer. The written test can be taken with an online proctor, at a test center or at a test event. The practical test is separate and always hands-on at a practical test site.

Our course works on any device, any time of day, with exam-style practice questions you can repeat until the material sticks. If your company wants to certify several drivers at once, send a request through the enrollment form. More detail is in the Florida requirements guide.

Questions people ask

Do I need certification if I only deliver trusses?

OSHA has a limited exemption for articulating cranes delivering materials in certain situations, but it has conditions. Many builders and suppliers require certification regardless. Ask your employer which rule they follow.

Does this page cover Malabar, Grant-Valkaria and Micco?

Yes. Crews in Malabar, Grant-Valkaria, Micco and the rest of south Brevard can use this page and the Brevard County page.

Can I take the written exam from home?

Yes, the certifying body offers online proctored testing for written exams. The practical still has to be done on a crane at a practical test site.
