Hendry County Crane Prep for Mill Season and the Off-Season

Hendry County runs on sugarcane and farmland, and its calendar follows the cane harvest. U.S. Sugar, headquartered in Clewiston, runs mills that together can grind up to 40,000 tons of cane a day from October through April. When grinding stops, maintenance starts, and that is when the cranes come out. The county seat, LaBelle, sits on the Caloosahatchee River about 18 miles east of Fort Myers; Clewiston sits on the south shore of Lake Okeechobee.

What the mill off-season means for crane crews

A raw sugar mill is heavy machinery from end to end: cane carriers, shredders, roller mills, boilers, evaporators, centrifugals. U.S. Sugar operates two mills, one at Clewiston and one at Bryant. Between harvests, crews rebuild and replace worn equipment, and much of that involves lifting heavy, awkward parts out of tight spaces inside a plant.

That is precise work. Rollers and gearboxes have off-center weights, pick points may be limited, and an overhead obstruction can be only a few feet above the load. The Rigger Level 2 course covers center of gravity, load distribution and multi-point rigging, which is the knowledge mill contractors look for. Whether a given task falls under construction or general industry rules depends on the work; your employer will tell you.

Farms, groves and pumps

U.S. Sugar's farmland covers more than 230,000 acres across Hendry, Glades, Martin and Palm Beach counties, and growers across the county depend on drainage and irrigation pumps. Pumps, motors and gates get pulled and reset with boom trucks. Farm shops and equipment yards add steel buildings and equipment sets.

LaBelle and the river

LaBelle grew around the Caloosahatchee at the junction of SR 80 and SR 29. River and bridge work, docks and seawalls bring marine lifting inland. Heavy summer rain swells the river and saturates low ground, so crews check soil before setting up near the bank.

Florida does not license crane operators; federal OSHA rules apply. Read the Florida requirements guide for the specifics.
