Collier County Crane Training, From the Coast to the Glades

Collier is one of the largest counties in Florida by land area, and most of it is wetland: Big Cypress, the Fakahatchee Strand and the Ten Thousand Islands. People and construction crowd into the western strip along the Gulf, then spill east along Immokalee Road and Oil Well Road into farm country. The county seat itself moved in 1962, when government offices left Everglades City for a new complex in East Naples on the Tamiami Trail.

Coastal high-rise and condo work in the city is covered on the Naples page. This page looks at the rest of the county.

Ave Maria and the eastern growth area

Ave Maria was founded in 2005 by Barron Collier Companies and the Ave Maria Foundation on former vegetable fields. County commissioners later approved, 4-1, an expansion that grows its stewardship receiving area to 7,970 acres and raises the cap to 17,738 homes, with road commitments on Camp Keais Road and Pope John Paul II Boulevard. Medical device maker Arthrex opened a 193,000-square-foot facility in the town in 2013.

A growing town needs schools, a wastewater plant, retail centers, water towers and thousands of houses. On the residential side, much of the lifting is truss and block delivery by articulating cranes; on the commercial side, tilt-wall panels and steel call for hydraulic cranes and riggers comfortable with bracing sequences.

Immokalee: farms, packing houses and equipment

Agriculture has long been Immokalee's largest industry; a county-commissioned study counted it as the source of about 60 percent of local jobs. Vegetable farms and citrus groves bring a seasonal workforce and a year-round need to maintain packing lines, irrigation pumps, cooling equipment and heavy machinery.

That is service truck crane territory. Mechanics lifting engines, pumps and components off a truck-mounted crane may fall into specific OSHA exemptions depending on the work, but the moment a service truck crane is used on construction, the crane rules apply. Many employers simply require certification. Our service truck crane operator course covers that sub-category.

Working out to the edge: Marco Island and Everglades City

Marco Island's bridges, seawalls and waterfront homes call for small cranes, barge work and careful access planning. Further southeast, Everglades City and Chokoloskee sit at the end of long two-lane roads, so one missing piece of rigging hardware can cost a full day. Plan the rigging list before the truck leaves.

Across the county, ground is the constant concern. Muck, marl and sand over a shallow water table, plus wetland-edge sites along the Tamiami Trail and I-75, mean crane mats are standard equipment rather than an extra.

Distance is the other planning factor. From Immokalee or Everglades City, any trip west for an exam or for replacement hardware eats half a day, which is one reason self-paced online study makes sense for crews out here: the written prep happens at home, and only the practical requires travel.

Questions people ask

Is the county seat Naples or East Naples?

County records place the seat in East Naples, where the government center on the Tamiami Trail has been since 1962. The City of Naples is separate.

Do farm equipment lifts require crane certification?

It depends on the task. Construction work falls under OSHA's crane standard; some maintenance and agricultural work may not. Employers often require certification either way. See the requirements guide.

I live in Immokalee. Where would I take the practical exam?

Practical exams happen at practical test sites, and the certifying body publishes current options. Written exams can often be taken by online proctoring, which saves a trip.
