Boca Raton Crane and Rigging Prep for Campus and Commercial Lifts

Boca Raton's construction market is driven less by skyline towers and more by institutions: a large public university, corporate office campuses, hospitals, and a long beachfront of mid-rise condos. That changes what a crane crew does here. Picks are often over or beside occupied buildings, mechanical and rooftop equipment make up a big share of the lifts, and owners tend to ask for clear documentation of who is certified and how each lift is planned.

Campus lifting at FAU and the office parks

Florida Atlantic University's main campus sits next to Boca Raton Airport and keeps adding research, housing and athletic buildings. University jobs mean working around students, scheduled around the academic calendar and close to the airport's traffic pattern, so crane height and lighting can be an issue.

On the city's west side, the former IBM campus where the original IBM PC was developed is now a multi-tenant office and research campus. Corporate campuses like it need cranes for rooftop chillers, generators, cooling towers and solar installations, plus the occasional structural renovation. Those lifts are typically short in duration but planned in detail, because the building stays occupied.

Rigging is the job

Many Boca Raton lifts are less about the crane than the rigging. A packaged rooftop unit with an off-center weight, a cooling tower section with lifting lugs at odd angles, or a generator with a fuel tank that may or may not be empty all require someone to figure out center of gravity, choose slings and spreaders, and check hardware ratings before the crane takes the load.

That is the work covered by our Rigger Level 1 and Rigger Level 2 courses: sling angles, hitch types, capacity reductions, below-the-hook devices and load control. OSHA requires qualified riggers for certain tasks, including crane assembly and disassembly and hooking or unhooking when workers are in the fall zone, and many Boca contractors require rigging credentials across the crew.

  • Get the actual weight and center of gravity from the equipment submittal.
  • Match sling capacity to the hitch and angle, not just the tag rating.
  • Plan a clear signal route when the operator cannot see the roof.

Hospitals and the beachfront

The city's hospitals and medical office buildings expand in phases, with rooftop helipads, emergency entrances and patient areas that must stay open during lifts. Along A1A, condo associations have been working through structural restoration and roof replacement since Florida's 2022 milestone inspection law, which brings short crane rentals for roofing material and mechanical equipment.

Coastal conditions apply on that side of town: salt spray, afternoon sea breezes and the full June 1 to November 30 hurricane season. Since 2025, s. 489.1132 of the Florida Statutes requires sites with tower cranes, covered mobile cranes or hoists to keep a hurricane plan available on site and secure the equipment at least 24 hours before expected impacts.

Certification steps for Boca Raton crews

Florida has no state, county or city crane operator license. Operators of covered cranes need accredited certification and an employer evaluation; signal persons need qualification under 29 CFR 1926.1428. Our courses prepare you for the written exams with self-paced lessons and exam-style practice questions, and they work on any device at any hour.

Book the written exam through online proctoring or at a test center, then take the hands-on practical at an approved site once you have seat time on the crane. Facilities teams and mechanical contractors can enroll several people with one enrollment request.

Questions people ask

Do rooftop HVAC lifts require a certified crane operator?

If the crane is covered by OSHA Subpart CC and the job is construction work, including equipment replacement, the operator needs certification for that crane type plus the employer's evaluation.

Is rigging certification required in Florida?

OSHA requires riggers to be qualified for certain crane tasks. A national rigging certification is a common way to show that, and many contractors require it.

Does Boca Raton have its own crane rules?

No. Florida law preempts local rules on construction hoisting equipment. Permits for street use or construction hours are separate from operator credentials.
