Pompano Beach Crane Certification Prep for Industrial and Marine Crews

Pompano Beach is where a lot of north Broward's working equipment lives. Industrial parks along I-95, the Turnpike and the rail lines hold contractors' yards, fabrication shops and distribution buildings, while the Intracoastal Waterway and the Hillsboro Inlet area support marinas and boat service. Crane operators based here tend to be generalists who might set steel in a warehouse on Monday, lift a yacht engine on Wednesday and work a beachfront condo roof on Friday.

Three kinds of job in one week

Industrial and distribution. Pompano's industrial districts sit inland of I-95 and around the Turnpike, close to the CSX and Florida East Coast rail lines. New warehouse and flex buildings bring tilt-wall panels, steel joists and roof decks. Existing plants bring equipment moves, generator sets and HVAC replacements.

Marine. Marinas, dry-stack storage and boat repair yards along the Intracoastal need cranes for engine pulls, mast work, boat lifts and dock construction. Many of those lifts happen right at a seawall, where ground support is limited and the load is awkward.

Beachfront. Condo towers along the ocean have been working through concrete restoration and roof replacements since Florida introduced milestone inspections in 2022. Those jobs use short-duration crane rentals to lift equipment and materials to the roof.

Lifting at the water's edge

Marine lifts trip up even experienced operators. A crane set behind a seawall may be sitting on fill over a structure that was never designed for outrigger loads, and a boat or engine is rarely as balanced as a pallet. Wet slings, unknown weights on older vessels and a load that sways in the wind off the Intracoastal all call for planning.

Good practice is to get the actual weight from the manufacturer or a scale, confirm ground and seawall capacity before setting up, use mats, and keep tag lines on anything that can catch the wind. Riggers working boat lifts should understand sling angles and center of gravity well enough to explain them, which is what Rigger Level 1 prepares you for.

  • Verify load weight; do not guess on boats or old machinery.
  • Check seawall and fill capacity before setting outriggers close to the water.
  • Use tag lines and watch afternoon wind shifts off the ocean.

Airport neighbors and height

Pompano Beach Airpark, a city-owned general aviation airport, sits in the middle of town, and Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is a short distance south. Tall cranes near either may need FAA review for obstruction, and approvals can limit boom height or require lighting. Check with the project before configuring a longer boom.

Keeping a certification current

Many Pompano crane operators have held certification for years, so recertification is as common a question as first-time testing. NCCCO certification lasts five years. To recertify you pass the written exam again, and operators who can document 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during the certification period can usually skip the practical retest. Our mobile crane recertification course reviews load charts, rules and operations for that exam.

First-time operators should start with mobile crane operator prep. Owners of boom trucks and knuckle-boom delivery trucks should look at the articulating crane course. All courses are self-paced and available 24/7 on any device. Written exams can be taken online or at a test center; the practical is hands-on at an approved site. Florida has no state or city crane license, so national certification and your employer's evaluation are what count.

Questions people ask

Is a crane used to lift boats covered by OSHA crane rules?

It depends on the activity. Construction work such as dock building falls under the construction crane standard. Routine boatyard lifting may fall under general industry or maritime rules. Ask your employer which applies.

How do I recertify without retaking the practical?

Pass the recertification written exam and document at least 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during your five-year period. Check NCCCO's current requirements before you apply.

Does Pompano Beach license crane operators?

No. Neither the city nor Broward County issues crane licenses. Federal OSHA requires accredited certification plus an employer evaluation.
