Sebring Crane and Rigging Prep, From Hendricks Field to Today

Sebring's biggest industrial site started as a wartime airfield. Hendricks Field trained Army Air Forces crews in World War II; afterward the base became Sebring Regional Airport, and part of its runways became the road course where the 12 Hours of Sebring has been run every March since 1952. The same property now holds a business park of about 2,000 acres. For crane crews, that one piece of land generates more steady work than anywhere else in the county.

Building in the airport commerce park

Sebring Regional markets its commerce park as being within 150 miles of most of Florida's population, with US 27, SR 70 and US 98 tying into the turnpike and interstates. Tenants have pointed to roads, water, sewer and utilities already in place. The airport is also a federally designated Foreign Trade Zone, No. 215.

Industrial park construction means steel frames, precast and tilt-up panels, roof-mounted equipment and process machinery. Each new building is a run of crane days. Hangars and aviation buildings add long-span trusses, which need careful rigging and a spreader arrangement to keep them from buckling as they are picked.

Airport work adds a constraint most crane crews never deal with: airspace. Tall equipment near a runway generally needs FAA review before it goes up, and the airport may limit boom height, require lighting or flagging, or set times when the boom must be down. Build that into the schedule before the crane arrives, not after.

A hospital tower going up downtown

Sebring's largest vertical job right now is medical. AdventHealth Sebring broke ground in early 2026 on a cardiovascular tower of about 101,000 square feet, reported at roughly $130 million, with Brasfield & Gorrie as general contractor and completion planned for fall 2027. The plan takes the hospital from 171 inpatient beds to 275 and adds cardiovascular operating rooms, a hybrid lab and expanded ICU space.

A multi-story hospital addition on an active campus is a different kind of lifting from the airport park. Cranes often set up within reach of occupied buildings, ambulance routes and parking, so swing areas, barricades and pick times get negotiated with the hospital. Rooftop air handlers, generators and imaging equipment are heavy, expensive and sometimes need tandem picks or a larger crane brought in for a single day. Subcontractors on a job like this commonly ask for certified operators and qualified riggers before they let anyone near the load, and the mechanical and electrical trades will need a signal person any time the operator loses sight of the hook behind the building.

Utility-scale solar is the other recurring job in the area. Duke Energy Florida announced a 45-megawatt plant on about 380 acres near Lake Placid in 2019, planned with roughly 180,000 tracking panels. Racking crews rely on telehandlers, but substation transformers and switchgear at plants like that go in with boom trucks and hydraulic cranes.

Race week and temporary structures

Big events at the raceway bring temporary grandstands, hospitality structures, camera and lighting towers and stages that go up and come down around race dates. Much of that is light lifting with telehandlers, boom trucks and small cranes, done quickly by crews working around the public. Fast schedules are exactly when a qualified signal person and a clear lift plan matter most.

Sand, heat and summer storms in town

Sebring sits on the Lake Wales Ridge among lakes such as Lake Jackson. The sandy soil drains quickly, but it can be loose, and it gives way at the edges of excavations and along lake banks. Set outriggers back from trenches and check whether there is fill under the pad location.

Summer brings near-daily thunderstorms. On an open site like the airport property, a crane boom is the tallest object around, so agree on lightning stop rules before the first pick and stick to them.

Credentials for Sebring crews

Our courses are self-paced and work on any device. Florida has no state crane license; see the requirements guide. The Highlands County page covers Avon Park, Lake Placid and the rest of the county.

Questions people ask

Does working on airport property change the certification I need?

No. The same OSHA operator rules apply. Airports add their own airspace and access rules on top of those.

Is a telehandler with a winch attachment a crane?

It can be. A forklift or telehandler configured to hoist and swing a suspended load may fall under the crane standard. Check with your employer before using one that way.

Can I take the written exam without leaving Sebring?

Yes, if you choose online proctoring. The practical exam still has to be taken at an approved practical test site.

What does a hospital job add for a crane crew in Sebring?

Mostly planning. Expect the owner and general contractor to ask for lift plans, set times when picks may happen, and keep the swing zone clear of patients, staff and traffic. Your certification stays the same; the site rules around it get tighter.
