Sarasota County Crane Training, From the Keys to North Port

Sarasota County is long and narrow: a chain of barrier islands on the Gulf, a built-up coastal strip along US 41, and newer neighborhoods spreading inland along I-75 toward North Port. Each part generates a different kind of lift, and the same crane company may send a boom truck to a Siesta Key house in the morning and a 90-ton hydraulic to a hospital roof in the afternoon.

Below we break the county down by the people doing the work rather than by town. Downtown Sarasota's condo towers and bayfront park get their own Sarasota city page.

If you run the crane

Most operator hours in the county go into building and rebuilding: mid-rise condos, medical offices, schools, and the elevated single-family homes that now dominate the keys. Sarasota Memorial Health Care System's nine-story, $186 million Courtyard Tower on its main campus is a good example of hospital work in the area: confined sites, active patient areas next door and long lists of rooftop equipment.

On the islands, access is the hard part. Narrow two-lane roads, drawbridges and tight lots mean smaller hydraulic cranes, careful route planning and checking posted bridge limits before the truck rolls. A mobile crane operator certification in the telescopic categories covers most of this work; the hands-on practical is still taken at a practical test site.

If you hook, rig or signal

Riggers on coastal jobs handle a lot of precast, glass and mechanical units, often flown over finished roofs or pools. OSHA expects a qualified rigger for assembly and disassembly and for hooking loads during that work, and many general contractors now ask for a third-party card as proof. Rigger Level 1 covers hitches, sling angles and hardware inspection.

Signal persons are required whenever the operator cannot see the load or the travel path, which on a house wedged between two others is most of the time. A signal person certification documents that you know the standard hand signals and voice procedures.

If you drive a boom truck or knuckle boom

Roof trusses, block, pavers, pool equipment and dock materials across Venice, Englewood and North Port mostly arrive on articulating cranes. Some deliveries fall under OSHA's limited exemption for articulating cranes placing materials on the ground, but setting trusses or holding a load for assembly generally does not. Employers increasingly want drivers certified either way. See articulating crane operator.

Conditions every Sarasota County crew deals with

  • Sandy soils over shallow groundwater: plan mats and outrigger pads, especially after rain.
  • Sea breeze and summer storms: gusts build in the afternoon and lightning can shut a site for an hour or more.
  • Salt exposure on the keys: inspect wire rope and hook latches more often than the minimum.
  • Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30: Florida's 2025 hoisting law (s. 489.1132) requires an on-site preparedness plan and securing cranes at least 24 hours before expected impact.
  • No local crane license: the county relies on federal OSHA rules. See the requirements guide.

Questions people ask

Do I need a different certification to work on the barrier islands?

No. The same national certifications apply countywide. What changes on the islands is site access, crane size and the planning that goes with it.

Where do Sarasota County candidates take the written exam?

Written exams can be taken through online proctored testing, at a test center or at a scheduled test event. The certifying body lists current options; the practical is always in person.

We are a small truss and roofing outfit. Can we enroll a few drivers at once?

Yes. Several workers can enroll together and each studies on their own device. Send a request through the enrollment form.
