Hollywood, Florida Crane Prep Between the Beach and the Port

Hollywood is squeezed between three very different lifting environments. To the east is a barrier beach lined with condos and hotels along the Broadwalk. To the north, part of Port Everglades falls inside city limits next to the airport. And in the middle of town sits the Seminole Tribe of Florida's Hollywood reservation, where one of the most recognizable buildings in South Florida was raised. Operators who work here move between salt-air beachfront jobs, port berths and resort construction, often in the same year.

The beach side

Hollywood Beach is a narrow barrier strip between the Intracoastal Waterway and the ocean, reached over a few bridges. Condo towers and resort hotels line it, many dating to the 1960s through the 1980s. That age profile means a lot of restoration work since Florida began requiring milestone inspections for older condominium buildings in 2022: concrete repair, balcony replacement, roofing and new mechanical equipment on the roof.

Lifting on the beach is all about access. Sites sit right on A1A with almost no room to stage, the Broadwalk is pedestrian-only, and every crane has to come across a bridge with weight and clearance limits. Planned lane closures, compact setups and careful rigging of irregular rooftop units are routine.

At the port's southern edge

Port Everglades spans Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Dania Beach. Its container berths at Southport have been the focus of a long expansion, including a turning-notch extension from 900 to 2,400 feet, crane rail work and the arrival of low-profile ship-to-shore cranes about 175 feet tall, designed so they would not intrude on the airport's approach path.

Construction work at the port, including wharf building, crane rail installation and utility upgrades, uses mobile and crawler cranes under OSHA's construction rules. The container gantries themselves are mostly operated under maritime and general industry rules. If you are moving between the two, make sure your certification matches the equipment you actually run.

Resort construction on tribal land

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on the tribe's Hollywood reservation added its guitar-shaped hotel tower, roughly 450 feet tall, in 2019 as part of a $1.5 billion expansion. Construction and maintenance on tribal property continues to use contract crane crews.

Federal OSHA generally covers private contractors working on tribal land, and the tribe or project owner may set additional site rules for badging, safety programs and documentation. Holding a recognized national certification makes it easier to meet whatever an owner asks for.

How the exams work

NCCCO certification has a written part and a practical part. Our courses prepare you for the written exams with self-paced lessons and exam-style practice questions you can open on any device at any hour. Book the written test through online proctoring or at a test center. The practical exam is taken hands-on at an approved site, and online prep does not replace it. Certification lasts five years; operators who log 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during that period may be able to skip the practical when they recertify. Send a request through the enrollment form and an advisor will reply.

Questions people ask

Do crane rules differ on the Seminole reservation?

Federal OSHA generally applies to private contractors there, and the tribe or owner can add its own site requirements. A national certification is the usual baseline.

Does Hollywood or Broward County license crane operators?

No. Florida has no state or local crane operator license, and state law preempts local rules on construction hoisting equipment.

How long does NCCCO certification last?

Five years. Recertification requires a written exam, and operators with 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during the period may not need a new practical.
